The GOP is about to enter a new political zone. Once they kick Liz Cheney out of her leadership position there will be little constraint to go even further and commit political suicide. Let us all be clear. Trump lost the 2020 election by an overwhelming margin. There was no fraud. No cheating. It was a defeat that Trump never wanted to accept because his weak authoritarian personality cannot accept that he was and is a failed leader. You may argue that a GOP that has lost its moral bearings may not be such a problem—it will continue to lose elections —what can be bad about that? The problem is January 6. Those who stormed the Capitol believed in the big lie and Trump’s project is to deny the legitimacy of any democratic process as he is doing with the latest recount shenanigans in Arizonia.
The Big Lie will now also become the GOP’s lead arguments to why they should regain political power in 2022 and 2024. The candidate they will embrace to lead them, Trump or one of his surrogates, will build on the big lie to further agitate the base to come out in droves and to raise tankers full of cash. The GOP believes correctly that their followers have no sense of history and can be taken down to swim in this river of lies because like the old Soviets and the Fascists before them—they want power more than they want anything else in the world. A short trip to any history of the 20th century will reveal that big lies were the well paved road authoritarian leaders took not just to controlling the governments of their countries but also to controlling their minds. Hitler managed to seize power by preaching to his followers that the so called world Jewish conspiracy had led to Germany’s defeat in World War 2. Let’s say it again for all those slackers who were asleep during the History classes what the consequences were —about 20 million dead including most of European Jewry and a world in ruins. Stalin killed an estimated 43 million people the majority of whom (39 million) were sent to Gulags in which they were killed performing forced labor.
Signing onto the lie that the 2020 election was stolen and making it a pillar of the GOP will now most certainly lead to political chaos, violence and potential death. Not right of way—but eventually—this is because one lie leads to another—each lie is a crime and has to be covered up by the next lie. A conspiracy of lies eventually forms around the Big Lie— “enemies” are implicated—those who are denying the truth of the Big Lie Then you just have to get rid of the truth tellers. How do you do this? You discredit them, those that cannot be discredited are then disposed of and when that does not work you distract your followers with more crazy ideas designed to separate out the liars from the truth tellers. The January 6 insurrection gives a hint of what is to come. The GOP has a small amount of time to draw back from the brink —let’s hope they do soon. Meanwhile the first question any one should pose to any GOP representative is do you or do not support the big lie? If they do they should be reminded of recent history and then called out and shamed.
